Franklin's Blanket

My little one has a blanket
My three year old son loves this book. We read it every night and he is able to feel what Franklin is feeling, which is great. This is one book that keeps his attention. The first time he saw this book he screamed in delight about Frankiln having a blanket just like his. This is such a nice book for all who have a blanket or for parents who had blankets.

for every kid with a special blanket.
My daughter and I love this book. After nearly 4 years of cuddling her blanket is tattered and torn just like Franklins. This is the first book she has been able to fully grasp the feelings of the characters in the book and relate to them. For any kid who has a special blanket and felt the panic of it missing this book will bring a smile. It let her know she is not the only one who loves a blanket.

Franklin's Thanksgiving

Franklin's Thanksgiving
This Book is one of my favorites. Franklin starts off in the beginning really upset because His grandparents couldn't make it for thanksgiving this year. It had always been a tradition for the family to get together and celebrate the holiday. So to make e Franklin happy his parents went out and invited other people in the town to come to dinner for a surprise. Not knowing Franklin invited his own people. So when thanksgiving morning came tons of people were at the house. And they all had a great thanksgiving. I would recommend this book to children 4-10. It was really cute and had great detailed pictures.

Thankful for Franklin
Thanksgiving often gets covered up with the rush for Christmas and we were looking for something to help us properly recognize this family holiday. Sharon Jennings gives us a warm story of Franklin's family that fits the bill. My 4 year old loves Franklin and this story is helping bridge the time between Halloween and Thanksgiving by giving us a family story worth sharing.
The colors of fall jump off the page and engage both our children, even our 6 year old. If you enjoy Franklin you will want to add this to you child's holiday book collection.

Franklin's Valentines
Published in Library Binding by Bt Bound (October, 1999)
Authors: Paulette Bourgeois, Brenda Clark, and Sharon Jennings

Great story of friendship
My daughter loved this story as did I as the emphasis on Valentine's Day was about friendship and taking a day and celebrating friendships. As Franklin lost all of his Valentine's in the mud and didn't have any for his friends, he couldn't believe they still wanted to give him their cards and letters. He realized that friends like you for who you are and not what you can give them. As a parent, if feel this is one lesson that your kids can't learn too often.

A Good Lesson in Friendship
My daughter loved this story of Frankin making his own Valentine's for his friends at school and losing them in a puddle in his hurry to get to the bus. He becomes upset and can't believe, even though he doesn't have cards to give to them, they still want him to have the ones they've made. In the end, Frankin decides to make "Friendship Day" the day after Valentine's Day with cards he's made and carefully put in his bag. It just teaches a great lesson of how nice people can be and how to appreciate the friends you have.

Freedom Under Fire: U.S. Civil Liberties in Times of War
Published in Paperback by South End Press (May, 1990)
Authors: Michael Linfield and Ramsey Clark
Average review score:

The Real American History
Forget those boring civics classes, forget those classes where American history's most important events were relegated to footnotes skipped over by the teacher. If Howard Zinn had not written "A People's History of the United States" Michael Linfield has written it for him.

Linfield's compelling revealations of the US government's record of civil liberties violations throughout our relatively short, bloody, aggressive and imperialistic history documents how every real and contrived wartime scenario has been used by the rulers to eliminate civil liberties and impose a true Pax Americana domestically.

Beginning with the American "Revolution" which appears to me to be less and less like a revolution and more and more like a contrived power and land grab by the greedy, not the needy. I believe that one could make a case for the fact that after their ascension to power, that American "revolutionaries" were as reactionary and oppressive as the power from whoom they had wrested control.

Each wartime scenario shattters any illusion of goodness or democracy with one holds certain rulers. As Jim Morrison wrote, "No One Here gets Out Alive." So, too, with the author. One comes swiftly to the conclusion that not one U.S. leader, either in declared wartime or between conflicts has really done anything to insure the civil liberties for which Americans fought and died on a myriad of foreign battlefields.

Linfield has written American history as it is, not as, Rush Limbaugh might ask, "The Way Things Ought to Be." This is indeed Mr. Wells' history, Howard Zin''s history, but not 10th grade American high schol history.

I highly recommend reading Linfield's book, checking out the footnotes and the primary source documents. Keep the book handy next time some...patriot resembling a beached whale drenches those around him with his version of American history. Linfield's book will rock their world.

Unduely neglected
Linfield's work provides a handy overview of extent to which Constitutional safeguards have been compromised over the years, particularly during wartime. Beginning with the infamous Alien and Sedition Acts of the Revolutionary war period, through the Civil War, W.W.I, and Vietnam eras, the author compiles a steady pattern of government assault on Constitutional restrictions whenever those restrictions become politically or militarily inconvenient. Of particular note in this regard, are the McCarran - Walter Act of the cold war era, aimed at resricting free flow of information and travel, and the notorious Palmer raids following W.W.I, aimed at curbing the rise of a socialist movement. Whether your politics are left, right or center, this historical record should be of interest. It shows pretty clearly how slender are these parchment-bound safeguards whenever established wealth and power feels threatened.

From the Gathering: The Wisdom of Little Crow
Published in Paperback by One World Pub (July, 1993)
Authors: Little Crow and C. F. Clark
Average review score:

A Gift for All reasons
This inspiring book offers a uique approach to any and all of life's challenges by overlaying the author's Native American world view onto contemporary life concerns. Written in the format of quotes taken from a series of talks, this makes a handsome gift that can be opened and enjoyed quickly.

Organized in four general categories (each covering an aspect of the sacred hoop; bravery, fortitude, wisdom and generosity) each chapter within offers hope for such personal concerns as love, family, creativity, fear, death...to name a few.

Broader social and political matters are also covered, especially as Little Crow demystifies and clarifies current American Indian issues with a refreshing avoidance of trendy "New Agism".

The editor has brought us a truth teacher who does not dance around serious matters, let alone wolves. Rather, he enables us to find our place at any moment, and thus we are encouraged to go about our lives with a new and optimistic perspective.

A Gift for All Reasons
As a book of quotes designed to inspire, this well-designed and user friendly text offers a practical yet unique approach to any challenge life offers. The author's Native American world view enriches by overlaying traditional thought onto contemporary life.

These inspirational messages cover everything from of personal concerns such as love, family, creativity, fear, death to the broader social and political matters. Carefully avoiding the familiar "New Agism" often found with American Indian philosophical treatment, the book also provides some never before expressed views of Indian issues that demystify while clarifying.

In putting the text into four categories that represent each the sacred aspects of the hoop -- generosity, fortitude, bravery and wisdom -- the editor brings us a truth teacher who does not dance around serious matters, let alone wolves.

Rather, he enables us to find our place within these aspects at any given time, and go out into the world with a different, and refreshing perspective.

This book is one of the best books ever!
This book is for all those Gable and Lombard fans. This book is a true hollywood love story. It gives a complete history of Gable and Lombard affair with some humor added in. You should buy it or check it out of your library today!

My favorite book
A fun-to-read book especially if you admire Carole Lombard like I do. She died before I was born, but I think she is the woman I most admire and look to as a hero

Gem Guides Guide to Highway 395: Los Angeles to Reno

Highway 395 Here We Come
This book is one of the best travel guides that I have ever used. There are so many historical landmarks and places of interest along Highway 395. This book encourages the reader to stop and visit. If time doesn't permit, it stimulates your curiosity and imagination. Ginny Clark uses her many years of travel on Hwy 395 to pass on her love of this unique area. This book has been loaned out to more people than any other book that we own. In fact, I am thrilled to find it on Amazon so that I can order it as a gift. Highly recommend!

Excellent resource; great book for vacationers.
We purchased this book in preparation for a vacation in the area of Reno, Tahoe and eastern California, and it was a gem. We visited many sites we would not have known about except for this book, and had a great time. Out thanks to the author for writing this very useful book. We recommend it to anyone.

God Said It, Don't Sweat It Sound Encouragement To Keep The Little Things From Overwhelming You
Published in Paperback by Thomas Nelson (18 August, 1998)

Outstanding
I received this book as a gift and highly recommend it! Easy & fast reading....with very meaningful short essays relating to everyday life. It is a must purchase for you & friends that are looking for ways that God can move in your life.

REALLY does put life's petty hassles in perspective!!!
How simple it is to turn frustration into peace. The author takes one bible quote and in one or two pages explains and applies it to life's everyday hassles. By the time I read one every day, hassles really become petty! The author's writing is clear and easy to read, and he makes you feel as though you can effortlessly apply each one to your everyday life. I felt as though each one was a simple solution to a more peaceful daily life. If each one page chapter were printed on the front page of the morning paper for everyone to read each day, the world would be a more pleasant and friendlier place.

Good Mornings: Great Breakfasts and Brunches for Starting the Day Right
Published in Paperback by Chronicle Books (August, 1996)
Authors: Michael McLaughlin and Dan Clark
Average review score:

A tremendous resource for anyone with overnight houseguests.
I purchased this book about a year and a half ago when it became clear that my holiday brunches were getting just a little TOO predictable. Family and friends knew what they'd be getting each time, and it was becoming just a little boring. Then Michael McLaughlin came to the rescue with GOOD MORNINGS.

He covers a variety of meal styles, from rib-sticking breakfast feasts to more elegant brunches, to some light & quick choices like Blueberry-Watermelon Smoothies. There are some recipes that appeal to adults (like the Warm Salad of Scrambled Eggs, Smoked Fish, and Greens, which was excellent and relatively simple to make for 4); others that are geared to younger tastes (such as PB & J--Peanut Butter & Jelly--French Toast Sandwiches--great when made with grape jelly!); and dishes with universal appeal like Creamed Hash Browns.

I now find myself using the book more and more when I have weekend houseguests. Since people's individual tastes can vary so widely early in the morning, there is definitely something for everyone in this collection. Even with a diverse group that included a dedicated dieter, another who wanted "just coffee", and others who were willing to indulge a bit, I've been able to pull together a good meal in very little time. (Many of the recipes have make-ahead steps.) In addition to the emphasis on relaxed entertaining, there are many good suggestions, particularly among the breads, rolls, and muffins (Carrot-Currant Bran Muffins are a particular favorite of mine), that will fill the bill nicely on a weekday morning when people are headed out to work or school. Now that the holidays are here, and I'm expecting visitors, I'm pulling this book out again so that I can feed them well, and still have some time for myself.

Good Mornings - innovative breakfast and brunch ideas
I gave this book to my husband for some occasion or another and used it myself to entertain friends from San Francisco. We had the Double Salmon Cakes, which must be started the night before, with Spicy Peach Ketchup(yum!) and Double Hominy Grits (obviously we're from the South) with Cheese and Green Onions. Also on the menu, Peppered Buttermilk Biscuits. We served the brunch on the deck (it was Memorial Day): everyone declared it a delicious meal and our friends have asked for the recipes. So I'm sending them a copy of the book as a "thank you" for my recent visit with them in SFO. The photography is beautiful and the page layouts easy to read.
